Warsaw Uprising veterans Wanda Traczyk-Stawska and Danuta Szlajmer pass away

Two veterans of the Warsaw Uprising have passed away at the age of 99.

Wanda Traczyk-Stawska, a social activist and former member of the Home Army and the Polish Underground State, died on August 18. The Jan Karski Society posthumously awarded her the 75th Anniversary Medal of the Jan Karski Mission for her lessons in patriotism, honor, and her dedication to Poland. Her children, Ewa Curran Stawska and Paweł Stawski, accepted the honor on her behalf.

Danuta Szlajmer, who served as a liaison and medic for the ‘Kiliński’ Battalion during the uprising, has also died. During the conflict, she participated in the battles for the PAST-a building. Following the uprising, she was held in the Ożarów transit camp and the German prisoner-of-war camp Stalag IV B Mühlberg before being sent to work in a rubber factory. After the war, she managed the Warsaw Stereoscope (Fotoplastikon Warszawski) before eventually moving to the United States.
