WASA imposes water restrictions in Tobago due to shortage threats

The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) has implemented immediate water use restrictions in Tobago to mitigate the threat of a serious shortage. The measures, which remain in force until further notice, prohibit the use of hosepipes, sprinklers, and pressure washers for watering private gardens or washing private motor cars.

WASA attributed the pressure on water resources to drier conditions linked to El Niño, compounded by the anticipated surge in consumption during the Tobago Carnival. The authority cited Section 49(1) of the Water and Sewerage Act, which allows for such restrictions when a shortage is threatened.

Residents, event organizers, and businesses are urged to practice conservation by using buckets and mops for cleaning, repairing leaks promptly, and ensuring taps are turned off when not in use. The authority emphasized that while conservation is critical, water for hygiene, sanitation, and food preparation must still be maintained.
