WASCO implements measures to address water leaks and infrastructure tampering

The Water and Sewerage Company (WASCO) is implementing new measures to address water supply challenges and infrastructure damage. Following reports of deliberate tampering with a valve at the Delcer Treatment Plant in Choiseul, Minister for Public Utilities Keithson Charles warned that such interference is a criminal offense that harms the local community and farmers.

Charles noted that the region is currently facing a 45% rainfall deficit, making water conservation critical. To support residents, the government has removed VAT on water tanks and encouraged rainwater harvesting.

To combat system inefficiencies, WASCO has established a Water Management Unit and a Non-Revenue Water Unit. These teams will focus on leak detection, repair, and improving metering accuracy. Additionally, major capital projects, including pipeline replacements at the John Compton Dam and in the North, are underway to reduce water loss. These infrastructure initiatives are being overseen by a Project Management Unit and are supported by international partners such as the Caribbean Development Bank.
