Washburn and Colorado School of Mines football game ends in tie due to extreme heat
A Division II college football game between Washburn and the Colorado School of Mines ended in a rare 16-16 tie on Saturday due to extreme heat in Topeka, Kansas. Officials from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association and the two schools decided to halt the game before overtime could begin because of dangerous weather conditions.
Despite the kickoff being rescheduled to 9 a.m. to avoid peak temperatures, the heat index reached 108 degrees Fahrenheit. Under conference rules, the game could not resume until the wet-bulb thermometer temperature dropped below 92.1 degrees, a threshold that was not expected to be met until nightfall.
Washburn secured the tie with a 48-yard touchdown in the final two minutes of regulation, while Colorado School of Mines missed a 64-yard field goal attempt as the clock expired.
