Washing machine efficiency and hygiene concerns
Washing machine usage habits can impact both household energy efficiency and hygiene. Experts note that running machines with small loads can be inefficient, as a half-load often consumes nearly the same amount of electricity as a full cycle. This is because components like the motor, water heating systems, and drainage pumps operate with fixed or minimally variable energy demands regardless of the load volume.
Regarding hygiene, microbiologist Bruno Brunetti warns that washing machines can accumulate microbial biofilms—communities of bacteria and fungi such as E. coli and Staphylococcus spp. that adhere to internal surfaces. These microorganisms can transfer to fabrics, potentially contaminating items even after washing. To manage this, the use of disinfectants is permitted, though users should test products on small fabric samples first to prevent staining.
