Washing machine maintenance and reliability guide

Maintaining washing machines requires attention to often-overlooked components to prevent performance issues. A common cause of poor spin cycles, loud noises, and unpleasant odors is a clogged drain filter. Located behind a small flap at the bottom of the machine, this filter catches debris such as hair, lint, coins, and small stones. When blocked, water stagnates, preventing the machine from reaching high spin speeds. To clean it, users should unplug the machine, place a container and towel underneath, and slowly unscrew the filter to drain residual water.

Beyond maintenance, appliance longevity is heavily influenced by brand reliability and design quality. Some manufacturers face criticism for high failure rates in essential components like bearings, drums, or electronic boards, often within three to four years of use. Consumers are advised to look beyond the initial purchase price and consider the quality of materials, the frequency of reported defects, and the availability of after-sales service and spare parts to ensure a machine lasts at least eight to ten years.
