Washing machine maintenance and the risks of household remedies

Maintaining washing machines is essential to prevent the accumulation of detergent residues, fabric fibers, organic matter, and limescale. Over time, these deposits can build up in hard-to-reach areas such as the drum, internal pipes, and heating elements, leading to unpleasant odors and reduced appliance efficiency.

While household remedies like vinegar are commonly used to combat limescale or odors, experts advise caution. Because vinegar contains acetic acid, repeated use may damage internal components such as gaskets, tubes, and fittings that are not designed for acidic exposure. It is recommended to consult the manufacturer's manual before using acidic substances like vinegar or citric acid. Specialized products, such as Meliconi’s 2-in-1 cleaner, are designed to simultaneously sanitize and protect the machine from limescale to preserve its lifespan.
