Washing machine maintenance: Citric acid and temperature tips
Maintaining washing machines requires regular internal cleaning to prevent the buildup of limescale and residue. While vinegar is a common suggestion, chemical engineer Diego Fernández recommends using citric acid as a more effective alternative that may be gentler on certain appliance components.
To clean the machine, it is advised to place four tablespoons of citric acid directly into the drum and run a wash cycle, preferably using a dedicated drum cleaning function and hot water. This maintenance should be performed every three to four months. Users should consult their appliance manual before application.
Additionally, washing clothes exclusively at low temperatures (30 to 40 degrees Celsius) can contribute to internal buildup. Regular use of higher temperatures, such as 60 or 90 degrees, is necessary to dissolve detergent and softener residues, eliminate bacteria, and ensure proper disinfection of items like towels and bedding.
