Washing machine maintenance: Effective cleaning methods and hygiene tips

Maintaining washing machine hygiene is essential to prevent odors, bacteria buildup, and skin irritation. Common sources of contamination include detergent residue, accumulated clothing dirt, fabric softener buildup in drainage pipes, and high humidity caused by closing the machine lid immediately after use.

Experts suggest several cleaning methods. While baking soda and white vinegar are popular household options, there is a risk that baking soda may not dissolve properly in cold water, potentially causing clumping and machine damage. A more effective alternative is sodium percarbonate (SPC), which releases active oxygen to break down stubborn grime and kill bacteria.

For effective cleaning, users should: 1. Clean the filter and rubber seals manually. 2. Use sodium percarbonate or specialized descaling salts. 3. Fill the machine with water and let the solution soak for several hours (up to 12 hours for better results). 4. Run a complete wash cycle, followed by two empty rinse cycles.

To maintain cleanliness, it is recommended to leave the machine door open after use to allow ventilation and to avoid using excessive amounts of detergent.
