Washing machines can develop summer odor; simple steps prevent it

In hot weather, washing machines are prone to develop a musty smell due to higher humidity, warm temperatures and low‑temperature wash cycles. Moisture left in the drum, a closed door, residue in detergent dispensers, and neglected seals create an environment where bacteria and mould multiply.

Cleaning and ventilation can stop the odor. After each load, leave the door and detergent drawer open to let the interior dry, wipe the door seal, and check the filter for lint. Using a hotter wash program or a dedicated cleaning cycle removes build‑up. Avoid washing only at low temperatures and remove wet laundry promptly to reduce moisture inside the machine.
