Washing machines: optimal temperatures and filter cleaning boost hygiene

Proper laundry hygiene depends on using the right wash temperatures and maintaining the washing‑machine pump filter. Towels should be washed at 60‑70 °C to eliminate bacteria and mould without damaging the fabric, while sheets are best cleaned at 60 °C; fine cotton or satin can be washed at 40 °C with a quality antibacterial detergent. Excessive use of fabric softener should be avoided, and vinegar can be used to soften fabrics.

The pump filter, often called a “foreign‑object catcher,” should be inspected and cleaned every three to six months. The procedure involves placing a towel on the floor, opening the filter cover, removing the filter, flushing out trapped debris with water, scrubbing it with a cloth or old toothbrush, and re‑installing it before running a short test cycle. Regular cleaning prevents odours, blockages, pump damage and costly service calls, and improves overall washing performance.
