Washington advocates urge state to restrict federal access to license data
Advocates in Seattle are calling on Washington state officials to further restrict federal immigration authorities' access to the state's Department of Licensing database. The push follows allegations that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have used license plate numbers to identify and detain individuals, including day laborers at a Shoreline Home Depot.
Lucía Vázquez Martínez, field director for Service Employees International Union 775, urged the state to cut off data access to slow down deportation and detention efforts.
Governor Bob Ferguson stated that his administration has already worked to curb unfettered access for Customs and Border Protection. He noted that the state aims to limit access for immigration enforcement while maintaining the data access necessary for public safety investigations, such as human trafficking cases.
