Bellingham boy and father injured in black bear attack

A 12-year-old boy and his father sustained minor injuries following a black bear attack in their backyard in Bellingham, Washington. The incident occurred on residential property in Whatcom County when Robin Westgate encountered a female black bear that was protecting her cub.

During the encounter, the bear charged the boy twice, causing puncture wounds to his hip. Westgate defended himself by gouging the bear's eyes. His father, Noah Westgate, intervened to protect his son and was also bitten during the struggle. The bear eventually fled the scene.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is aware of the incident and is attempting to trap the bear, which has since returned to the area. The family noted that the boy had previously been taught how to react to bear encounters in their neighborhood.
