Washington cities face budget crises threatening public safety services

Municipalities in Washington are facing significant budget challenges that threaten public safety services. In Pasco, a proposed financial plan includes nearly $14.4 million in general fund reductions. Potential scenarios involve cutting approximately three dozen police and firefighter positions, with even the most conservative plan involving the loss of a dozen officers and the closure of a fire station.

Residents and the Pasco Firefighters Union have voiced strong opposition to these measures. Union President Jeremy Garrett warned that eliminating positions would directly harm the community and the personnel involved.

In Seattle, a recent revenue forecast provided a slight improvement to the city’s budget outlook through 2028, but it remains insufficient to fully close a $175 million deficit. While revenues for 2026 are projected to be $9 million higher than expected, the city still faces significant gaps. Local officials are debating how to address potential cuts to the Seattle Fire Department’s overtime budget, which could reduce daily staffing targets and impact service access in certain neighborhoods.
