Washington citizen panel rejects pay hike for governor

The Washington Citizens Commission on Salaries for Elected Officials has recommended a salary freeze for Governor Bob Ferguson and the attorney general for the next two years. This decision, made during a meeting in Olympia on October 15, marks a significant departure from 2024, when the commission granted a 14% pay increase to these same positions.

While executive salaries for the governor and lieutenant governor will remain unchanged, the commission approved several other adjustments. State lawmakers, the superintendent of public instruction, the treasurer, and the commissioner of public lands are slated to receive 2% increases in July 2027 and another 2% in July 2028. Similarly, judges and state Supreme Court justices will receive 2% annual increases starting next July.

In contrast, the commission voted to increase the salaries for the secretary of state, insurance commissioner, and state auditor by 5% annually over the next two years. Commissioner Steve Smith noted that higher pay for certain state executives is necessary to attract the best candidates to those roles.
