Washington Commanders DT Johnny Newton undergoes surgery for torn pectoral

The Washington Commanders are facing significant defensive line setbacks during training camp. Defensive tackle Johnny Newton underwent surgery for a torn pectoral muscle sustained during a preseason game against the Miami Dolphins. Newton is expected to miss a significant amount of time, potentially sidelining him for the duration of the season if placed on injured reserve.

To mitigate the loss, the team is looking toward veteran defensive tackle Tim Settle, who is currently ramping up his return from a Lisfranc injury. Head coach Dan Quinn noted that Settle has hit a major milestone in his recovery process.

Other injuries impacting defensive coordinator Daronte Jones' unit include cornerback Trey Amos (ankle), linebacker Jordan Magee (shoulder), and defensive lineman Deatrich Wise Jr. (quad). Additionally, edge rusher Dorance Armstrong Jr. is facing a one-game suspension.
