Washington Commanders focus on quarterback overhaul ahead of 2026 season

The Washington Commanders are reshaping their quarterback roster as they prepare for the 2026 NFL season. Starting quarterback Jayden Daniels, the former rookie sensation who led the team to the 2024 NFC Championship, is learning a new offense introduced by newly promoted offensive coordinator David Blough after Kliff Kingsbury’s departure. Daniels, who missed time with injuries in 2025 and saw the team finish 5‑12, said the unit still has “a long way to go” in mastering the system.

Behind Daniels, the team’s third‑string competition centers on Sam Hartman and Athan Kaliakmanis. Hartman, a former Wake Forest and Notre Dame starter, has bounced between practice squads since signing as an undrafted free agent in 2024. Kaliakmanis, a former Minnesota and Rutgers quarterback drafted in the seventh round, posted solid college numbers and is hoping to earn a roster spot this summer. The Commanders hope the depth will prevent another reliance on a journeyman third‑string quarterback as in the previous season.
