Washington Commanders release merchandise featuring retired Redskins name

The Washington Commanders have introduced new official merchandise featuring the franchise’s retired Redskins name and logo. The items are part of a Mitchell & Ness throwback collection honoring former players such as Art Monk, Darrell Green, and Sean Taylor.

While the team dropped the former identity in 2020 following pressure regarding its use of Native American imagery, the new apparel prominently displays the old name and helmet logo. The franchise stated that the limited release is a legal necessity to protect its trademark rights. According to a team spokesperson, the marks must remain in commercial use to prevent them from lapsing, which would allow unauthorized third parties to produce bootleg versions.

The team maintains that the decision to rebrand as the Commanders is permanent and that these items are specifically intended to honor alumni rather than signal a return to the former name.
