Washington Commanders release offensive tackle D. J. Humphries

The Washington Commanders have released veteran offensive tackle D. J. Humphries, just two weeks after signing him to a non-guaranteed $1.3 million contract. The move comes ahead of the team’s Week 1 opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Humphries was originally brought in as depth following a triceps injury to cornerstone left tackle Laremy Tunsil. By releasing him before Week 1, the Commanders avoid the full-season termination-pay protection that would have applied to Humphries as a vested veteran had he remained on the roster for the season opener.

The decision leaves the Commanders with an empty roster spot and places significant responsibility on Brandon Coleman to fill the void at left tackle. While Andrew Wylie remains an emergency swing tackle option, the team appears to be betting on Coleman’s ability to perform. The move coincides with news that Eagles edge rusher Jonathan Greenard will be ruled out for Sunday’s game.
