Washington Commanders sign punter Matt Haack, add WR River Cracraft and release LB Andre Carter

The Washington Commanders announced a series of roster moves on Wednesday ahead of their first training‑camp practice. Veteran punter Matt Haack was signed after starter Tress Way suffered a minor pectoral injury that will keep him sidelined for the start of camp. Haack, who posted a 51.3‑yard gross average with the Arizona Cardinals last season, also provides experienced holding duties.

The team also added wide receiver River Cracraft, a former practice‑squad player who appeared in two games last season but recorded no catches. Cracraft’s value lies in his special‑teams contributions and depth at receiver. To make room for the new signings, the Commanders released outside linebacker Andre Carter and tight end Anthony Firkser. Additionally, center Fred Davis II was activated from the Active/Non‑Football Illness list.

General manager Adam Peters indicated that Way’s injury is not expected to keep him out for an extended period, allowing Haack to handle punting and holding duties while Way rehabs.
