Washington, D.C. awards Lyft contract to expand Capital Bikeshare

Washington, D.C. has awarded a new five-year contract to Lyft to operate and maintain Capital Bikeshare. The agreement aims to expand the network, increase the number of docking stations, and advance the electrification of the bike fleet. The new contract will include electric docking stations capable of charging e-bikes to improve availability and lower operating costs.

In the broader context of electric mobility, electric vehicle sales in the southeastern United States grew by 25% in the first half of 2026 compared to 2025. This growth occurred across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee, despite a net decrease in investment and jobs due to manufacturing cancellations.

Additionally, electric school buses are being utilized as mobile energy storage units. Through V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid) and V2X technology, these buses can return power to the electrical grid during peak demand or emergencies, enhancing grid resilience.
