Washington D.C. Ballot Initiative to Ban Foie Gras Qualifies for November Vote

Initiative 86, titled the “Prohibiting the Force‑Feeding of Birds Act of 2026,” has qualified for the November ballot in Washington, D.C. after submitting more than 46,000 signatures, nearly double the required number. The measure would ban the sale of foie gras produced by force‑feeding ducks and geese, imposing fines of $1,000 to $5,000 and possible loss of a business license on retailers or restaurants that violate it. Individuals would still be allowed to possess foie gras for personal consumption.

The campaign is led by the animal‑rights group Pro‑Animal Future, with media lead Natalie Fulton highlighting the cruelty of force‑feeding. Opposition comes mainly from the restaurant sector, with chefs such as Bart Hutchinson expressing concern over the ban’s impact on culinary businesses. If passed, the ban would take effect on July 1, 2027, though it may face legal challenges similar to those seen in California and New York.
