Washington, D.C. crime trends show overall decline despite rise in weapon-related assaults

Data released by the Metropolitan Police Department on August 10, 2026, indicates that most major crime categories in Washington, D.C. are trending downward. However, assault with a deadly weapon (ADW) charges have seen a significant increase, rising to 767 in 2026 from 545 in 2025, a rise of more than 40 percent.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro previously noted concerns regarding the accuracy of crime reporting, alleging that certain offenses like burglary and assault with a dangerous weapon were being reclassified as lesser crimes such as unlawful entry or reckless endangerment. This followed the termination of 13 Metropolitan Police Department officers over reports of crime data manipulation.

Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that since the implementation of the Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force one year ago, the Department of Justice and law enforcement partners have made over 16,000 arrests and removed thousands of illegal drugs and firearms from the streets.
