Washington, D.C. protesters oppose robotaxi legislation
Union workers, rideshare drivers, and faith leaders demonstrated at the John Wilson Building to protest the Autonomous Vehicle Deployment Authorization Amendment Act of 2026. The proposed legislation, introduced by Councilmember Charles Allen, aims to establish a regulatory framework for commercial driverless vehicle services in Washington, D.C., with potential operations beginning in 2028.
Protesters expressed concerns regarding job displacement for professional drivers and questioned whether autonomous services would provide long-term cost savings for consumers.
Under the proposed bill, the District Department of Transportation would oversee the program, initially capping operators at 200 vehicles per company. To secure commercial permits, companies must complete at least 180 days and 250,000 miles of autonomous testing within the District. The framework also includes significant financial requirements, such as a $1 million application fee, a $5 million permit fee, and a $0.15 per-mile surcharge for autonomous trips. Additionally, providers must submit plans to ensure equitable service across all eight city wards.
