Washington, D.C. residents face deep impact from federal job cuts
A new survey by Gallup and the Greater Washington Community Foundation reveals the significant economic impact of federal workforce reductions in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. The cuts, stemming from an overhaul of the federal workforce by the Trump administration and the Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency, have resulted in approximately 100,000 job losses across the region.
The District of Columbia has been particularly affected, accounting for one-fifth of these losses. According to the survey, roughly two-thirds of D.C. residents reported that their households were directly impacted by the job cuts. The data indicates that more affluent households were hit harder, with 58% of those earning $90,000 or more reporting an impact, compared to 48% of lower-income households.
Residents in the DMV area (D.C., Maryland, and Virginia) are facing a bleak local job market and rising costs, leading some to consider leaving the region entirely.
