Washington D.C. Robotaxi Bill Sparks Uber‑Waymo Clash

A proposed Washington D.C. law introduced by Councilmember Charles Allen would set high entry costs for autonomous‑vehicle operators: a $1 million application fee, a $5 million non‑refundable permit and a $0.15‑per‑mile tax, alongside $5 million minimum insurance and rapid accident reporting. Uber opposes the bill, arguing it would give Waymo a monopoly and push out human drivers. Uber’s policy chief Javi Correoso said, “Hybrid model means that consumers should have the ability to access both.”

Waymo supports the legislation, saying it provides a clear regulatory framework for safe autonomous deployment and calls for proportionate, not punitive, rules. A spokesperson, Ethan Teicher, stated the bill enables safe autonomous deployment.

The two firms ended their partnership earlier this year after years of collaboration on autonomous rides. The dispute illustrates a broader battle over how AI‑driven transport will coexist with human drivers, and could become a template for other U.S. cities if D.C.’s measure passes.
