Washington D.C. undergoes major physical redesign under Trump administration

The Trump administration is undertaking significant physical redesigns of Washington, D.C., through various executive orders and construction projects. A central component of this effort is the ‘Making the District of Columbia Safe and Beautiful’ executive order, which aims to reshape the city's physical institutions.

Notable projects include the demolition of the White House East Wing to facilitate the construction of a new ballroom, a project that has seen costs rise from $200 million to $400 million. Additionally, the administration has installed a new exhibition at Freedom Plaza titled ‘Spirit of ’76’. This display features a prominent equestrian statue of Caesar Rodney, a Founding Father and enslaver, which was relocated to the plaza after being removed from its original site in Delaware during 2020 protests.

These renovations have faced criticism regarding their impact on historical preservation and the democratic character of the capital, as many changes are being implemented without congressional consultation.
