Washington Dulles Airport approves $19.9 billion overhaul plan

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority has approved a $19.9 billion overhaul plan for Washington Dulles International Airport. The massive project includes $6.2 billion for the reconstruction of the main terminal, which is scheduled to begin in late 2027.

A significant portion of the budget, $3.75 billion, is allocated to constructing new underground tunnels and an automated passenger transportation system to replace current tarmac vehicles. These upgrades, along with a new concourse, are expected to be completed by 2034.

To fund $1.1 billion of the new transit system, airline boarding costs are projected to rise from $13 to between $60 and $65 by approximately 2038. The project will be largely financed through $14.2 billion in new municipal bonds, following $4.4 billion already approved by the authority.
