U.S. President Trump unveils $22.5 billion overhaul of Washington Dulles Airport
U.S. President Donald Trump announced a $22.5 billion plan to modernize Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia. The proposal calls for four new concourses, an expanded AeroTrain rail link, a larger international arrivals and customs facility, and more than five million square feet of new and renovated space. Additional upgrades include extra gates, upgraded baggage handling, expanded concessions and new passenger lounges, while preserving architect Eero Saarinen’s iconic main terminal.
Funding will be provided through municipal bonds issued by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority in partnership with airlines such as United, rather than direct federal appropriations. Officials said the project will be built in phases so the airport can stay open, and it is expected to double the airport’s capacity for planes, passengers and visitors, creating thousands of jobs and attracting new business investment to the region. Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger, Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, and Representative Suhas Subramanyam all voiced support. The redevelopment is part of a broader Trump‑led effort to redesign Washington’s public spaces, including the White House.
Construction could begin early next year, with the new facilities slated to transform Dulles into a world‑class gateway.
