Washington Dulles Airport to undergo $22‑billion renovation

President Donald Trump announced a $22‑$22.5 billion plan to remodel Washington Dulles International Airport. The project will be financed by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, United Airlines and other carriers through municipal bonds and airline contributions, with no direct federal funds. It calls for four new concourses, the replacement of the existing C and D concourses, a fifth terminal, more than 5 million sq ft of new or renovated space, an expanded AeroTrain system, a new underground people‑mover tunnel and parking for about 32 000 cars. Officials said the overhaul will double the airport’s capacity for aircraft, passengers and visitors and is expected to create thousands of jobs and attract additional investment to the region. Construction is planned to begin early next year and will be phased so the airport can stay open during the work. Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger and senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine praised the plan as a vital boost for the Commonwealth’s economy.
