Washington Grilling Decline as Beef Prices Spike

Ground beef prices have risen sharply, with Nielsen data showing a 14% year‑over‑year increase and USDA reports indicating a record average of $9.64 per pound in April. By contrast, chicken breast prices have stayed relatively stable at about $4.17 per pound.

The higher cost of beef is leading fewer Americans in Washington to grill burgers. Shoppers are switching to cheaper proteins such as chicken, turkey, fish, and even ground pork, and are experimenting with alternatives like mushrooms or mixing ground turkey into patties. Some consumers are also opting for frozen ground beef or less expensive cuts like skirt steak to keep grill season affordable.
