Washington high school football faces season cancellations

High school football programs in Washington state are facing significant challenges, highlighted by the cancellation of varsity seasons at Todd Beamer and Hazen high schools.

At Todd Beamer in Federal Way, administrators and coaches decided to cancel the remainder of the varsity league season and transition to junior varsity play. This decision follows a period of attrition and a roster depleted by injuries.

Hazen High School in Renton is facing different difficulties, described as a culture problem rather than just roster depth or injuries. Reports indicate that Hazen coach Marcus Carr left his previous position at Inglemoor unceremoniously in 2025. A public records request has been filed to clarify the circumstances surrounding Carr’s departure.

Despite these issues, the two schools met on October 16 at Renton Memorial Stadium, where Todd Beamer secured an 18-13 victory.
