Washington law enforcement expands automated license plate reader use

Law enforcement agencies across Washington state are increasingly adopting automated license plate reader technology, such as Flock cameras, to address police staffing shortages and accelerate criminal investigations. Agencies in areas including Stanwood, Montesano, Grant County, Selah, and Wenatchee are utilizing the systems to track vehicles related to serious crimes, including domestic violence and murder.

While some departments report significant successes in locating suspects and solving major investigations, the expansion of this technology has sparked debate. Critics and some municipalities, such as Seattle and Renton, have paused their programs due to concerns regarding privacy, data sharing, and the potential for officer misuse. Some officials view the technology as a vital ‘force multiplier,’ while others remain cautious about the practical services provided versus the initial marketing.
