Washington Luís Highway to use AI for traffic enforcement

Starting October 1, the Washington Luís Highway (SP-310) in the São José do Rio Preto region will implement an advanced traffic enforcement system using artificial intelligence. The technology will utilize high-resolution cameras operating 24 hours a day to identify drivers using mobile phones while driving or failing to wear seat belts.

The monitoring will be concentrated at kilometer 438 in both north and south directions, near Avenida Alberto Andaló. While the concessionaire Ecovias Noroeste Paulista is responsible for the installation and maintenance of the equipment, the Military Highway Police (PMRv) will maintain exclusive authority over image analysis and the application of fines.

The initiative aims to reduce traffic accidents in an urban stretch that recorded 373 occurrences between January and August 2026. The AI system provides a significant advancement by being able to detect seat belt violations remotely, a task that previously required direct observation by officers.
