Washington man charged in shooting of Georgia National Guard member

Jarrell Lamont Jackson, 41, has been charged with multiple firearms offenses following a shooting in southeast Washington. The incident occurred in the Eastern Market neighborhood when Jackson allegedly shot Karon Jones, a 20-year-old member of the Georgia National Guard, in the leg.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department, the shooting took place around 11:10 p.m. while National Guard members were attempting to intervene in a fight on a sidewalk. Three members of the unit returned fire, wounding Jackson. Neither individual sustained life-threatening injuries.

Jackson faces charges including unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by a felon, assault with a dangerous weapon, and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence. The deployment of the National Guard to Washington, which began in August 2025, has been a subject of political debate regarding its effectiveness and cost.
