Washington Nationals focus on roster upgrades and pitching rotation

The Washington Nationals are preparing to transition out of their rebuilding phase by seeking talent upgrades, particularly within their pitching staff. President of baseball operations Paul Toboni has identified Cade Cavalli, Andrew Alvarez, and Connelly Early as the three primary candidates for the starting rotation heading into next season.

Cavalli enters the upcoming campaign following a strong season where he recorded 200 strikeouts and a 3.02 ERA over 32 starts. Toboni expressed optimism regarding Alvarez’s performance and the potential of Early, though the remaining rotation spots are expected to be contested.

Simultaneously, the team faces questions regarding the long-term role of catcher Keibert Ruiz. Despite an eight-year extension running through 2030, Ruiz’s recent statistical performance has been criticized, including a low wRC+ and poor defensive metrics. The organization has recently begun integrating prospects like Harry Ford into the roster following leadership changes in the baseball operations department.
