Following this defensive shift, Nasim Nunez is expected to serve as the team's primary shortstop. Analysts have noted Nunez's offensive struggles, including a .578 OPS and a 67 wRC+, which is significantly below the league average. While Nunez possesses defensive capabilities, his performance has been marked by 13 errors this season.

Nationals president of baseball operations Paul Toboni stated that the decision to move Abrams was difficult but based on defensive statistics. The move comes amid discussions regarding the team's infield stability and the long-term viability of Nunez as an everyday starter.
