CJ Abrams to move from shortstop to second base for Washington Nationals
The Washington Nationals have announced that All-Star shortstop CJ Abrams will transition to second base. The move, described by manager Blake Butera as a decision to optimize the team's defensive lineup, will involve Abrams swapping positions with second baseman Nasim Nuñez, who will move to shortstop.
Abrams, who is currently having a career year offensively with 28 home runs and 91 RBIs, has played shortstop for all five of his seasons with the club. While the transition is expected to be completed within a few days, Abrams is expected to continue playing shortstop approximately once a week.
The decision was a collaborative effort between Butera, president of baseball operations Paul Toboni, and general manager Ani Kilambi. Although Abrams expressed that he still views himself as a shortstop long term, he has begun working out at the new position.
