Washington Nationals overhaul player development and pitching strategy

The Washington Nationals are implementing a comprehensive organizational overhaul focused on player development and pitching performance. Under President of Baseball Operations Paul Toboni, the franchise is integrating scouting, acquisition, and development into a unified system. This strategy includes expanding development staff, utilizing new technology, and creating individualized communication plans for players across the minor and major league affiliates.

A primary objective of this restructuring is to improve pitching velocity. After ranking 28th in the majors in fastball velocity during recent seasons, the organization plans to launch strength-and-conditioning camps for minor leaguers and detailed programs for major leaguers. The goal is to increase velocity and improve overall pitching effectiveness through these specialized labs and conditioning plans.

The talent pipeline is being bolstered through the 2026 draft, international signings, and trades. Key prospects identified in the system include Eli Willits and first-round selection Chris Hacopian, alongside international additions such as Samil Serrano and Isaias Suarez.
