Washington Nationals rookies Morales and Simpson shine in debuts
The Washington Nationals defeated the Atlanta Braves 9-5 on Tuesday night, highlighted by the successful Major League debuts of Yohandy Morales and Jared Simpson. Both players were promoted from the minors prior to the game.
Morales, a 24-year-old designated hitter, recorded three hits in his first game, including a solo home run in the third inning. He also contributed a single and a double to the Nationals' offense.
Reliever Jared Simpson earned the win after entering the game in the fifth inning with runners on first and second base and no outs. Simpson pitched three perfect innings to secure the victory. This performance marks only the second time since 1901 that a player has homered in his debut while a different teammate earned the win on the mound in his own debut.
