Washington officials charged for not reporting trans wrestler assault

Principal Jason Smith, 55, and athletic coordinator Peter Collins, 49, of Rogers High School in Puyallup, Washington, were charged on July 21 with a gross misdemeanor for failing to comply with the state’s mandatory reporting law after a female wrestler alleged she was sexually assaulted by a transgender opponent during a December 2025 match. Prosecutors say the school district did not notify law enforcement or the Department of Children, Youth and Families until 55 days after the incident, violating RCW 26.44.030.

The alleged assault, described as an illegal “oil check,” was reported by the victim’s mother, Kallie Keeler, who also provided video evidence. No criminal charges have been filed against the athlete. The Puyallup School District now faces a U.S. Department of Education investigation over possible Title IX violations, and the case has been cited by anti‑transgender initiatives seeking to bar transgender students from competing in girls’ sports.
