Washington officials consider camping ban at Ancient Lakes

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is considering a ban on camping in the Ancient Lakes area, also known as Babcock Bench, located within the Columbia Basin Wildlife Area in Central Washington.

The agency cited adverse environmental impacts from irresponsible visitors as the primary reason for the proposal. Key concerns include sanitation issues, as the area is approximately one mile from the nearest trailhead restrooms, and the illegal use of campfires in a high-desert environment, even during active burn bans.

If implemented, the ban is proposed to take effect on January 1, 2027. The WDFW has extended the public comment period for this action until October 30. The Washington Trails Association has also requested an extension regarding the proposal.
