Washington Park mass shooting in Chicago leaves one dead and 14 wounded
A mass shooting in Chicago’s Washington Park on Saturday night left one person dead and at least 14 others wounded. The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. in the 5400 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue during a gathering that included a reunion for former residents of the Robert Taylor Homes.
Acting Police Superintendent Fred Waller stated the shooting appeared “somewhat targeted” and may have involved an exchange of gunfire, noting that some individuals in the crowd may have been armed. Police reports indicate two gunmen wearing ski masks opened fire. Investigators recovered at least 36 shell casings, including rifle casings, and a weapon at the scene.
The deceased has been identified as 35-year-old Rontonio Guterz. The victims, ranging in age from 21 to 47, were transported to various hospitals, including the University of Chicago Medical Center and Stroger Hospital. While some victims are in stable condition, others remain in serious or fair condition.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson addressed the violence, emphasizing the devastating impact of gun crime on the community. As of Monday, no arrests have been made. Cook County Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the identification of the suspects.
