Washington Post and Washington Sun face news rivalry in D.C
A competitive rivalry is emerging in the Washington, D.C. news market between the established Washington Post and the new digital-only Washington Sun.
Owned by Jeff Bezos, the Washington Post reported promising subscription growth and stated it is on track to reach its closest path to profitability in five years by the end of 2026. As part of leadership changes, Jeff D’Onofrio has been permanently promoted to publisher and CEO. This follows a period of significant workforce reductions where the Post laid off about one-third of its staff.
Meanwhile, the Washington Sun, formerly known as NOTUS, has rebranded and is expanding its digital presence. Owned by Robert Allbritton, the Sun is actively recruiting staff and competing for readers by replicating certain successful elements of the Post, such as weather coverage through the Capital Weather Gang brand.
