Washington Reflecting Pool Faces Damage After Trump-Ordered Renovation

The Reflecting Pool at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington was overhauled in early 2023 at the direction of President Donald Trump ahead of the United States' 250th independence anniversary. The project installed a polyurethane coating to seal the pool's concrete basin, but after refilling, algae growth and discoloration were reported.

A recent filing by the National Park Service details that the foam seal over the coating was cut with a sharp knife or razor, and that debris, including about 70 fence‑top pieces, fell into the water. The filing states the damage includes “brtvilo preko pjenaste izolacije prerezano oštrim nožem ili britvom”. Five individuals have been arrested on vandalism charges, with five more federal complaints issued. President Trump previously blamed vandals and alleged fertilizer was introduced into the water, promising evidence in court.

Legal documents indicate a nonprofit organization sued to halt further work on the site. The National Park Service plans to drain the pool after the July 4 Independence Day celebrations to assess and repair the damage. The episode has been cited as an example of the contentious legacy of Trump‑initiated projects at national monuments.
