James Cody Bryant denied bail in Tumbler Ridge shooting conspiracy case

A U.S. federal judge has denied bail to James Cody Bryant, a Bellingham, Washington, resident accused of conspiring in the February mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. Bryant faces charges of conspiracy to murder persons in a foreign country.

Prosecutors allege that Bryant maintained extensive communication with the shooter, 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, and provided assistance including money, advice, and an agreement to livestream the attack. Investigators noted that Bryant allegedly had the ability to alert law enforcement but chose not to intervene. The February shooting resulted in eight deaths, including six children, and 27 injuries. Van Rootselaar died of a self-inflicted wound.

Defense attorneys argue that Bryant did not initiate the planning and instead attempted to dissuade the shooter. They noted that Bryant has no criminal record and maintains stable employment and housing. Judge Mary Alice Theiler ordered Bryant to be detained, citing concerns that no release conditions could ensure community safety.
