Washington state leaders debate millionaire income tax repeal

A debate at the Eastside Leadership Conference in Bellevue highlighted deep political divisions regarding a ballot measure to repeal Washington state’s income tax on millionaires.

Opponents of the tax, including hedge fund manager Brian Heywood and House Minority Leader Drew Stokesbary, argue that the tax is unnecessary and risks driving wealthy residents and capital out of the state. They expressed concerns that the tax could eventually impact lower earners.

Supporters, including State Senator Manka Dhingra and Soleil Boyd of the Children’s Alliance, contend the tax is essential to address a regressive tax system. They argue that the revenue is necessary to maintain the state's quality of life and fund services for a growing population, noting that 41 other states utilize similar tax codes.
