Washington State ports announce infrastructure and transit updates

The Port of Orcas has announced plans to operate a temporary mobile asphalt plant at the Sea Island Quarry to support its runway rehabilitation project. The project, a partnership with the Federal Aviation Administration and the Washington State Department of Transportation, requires approximately 6,000 tons of asphalt to resurface runways, taxiways, and the apron. Local production was chosen to reduce ferry and road traffic, lower carbon emissions, ensure schedule reliability, and maintain asphalt temperature for higher-quality pavement.

Separately, officials from the Port of South Whidbey and the Port of Everett are considering expanding the “Harbor Hopper” passenger ferry pilot program in summer 2027. Following a successful three-month trial between Everett and Langley that provided roughly 1,500 trips, officials aim to increase service frequency to encourage tourism and local business engagement.
