Washington state reports over 700,000 ballots cast

As of Friday afternoon, more than 705,231 ballots had been returned in Washington state, representing 13.7% of the state’s 5.15 million registered voters. The three most populous counties—King, Snohomish, and Pierce—accounted for 47% of the total ballots submitted via mail or drop boxes.

Data shows that 66.4% of returned ballots arrived via drop boxes. State and local officials have encouraged voters to use drop boxes rather than the U.S. Postal Service to ensure timely counting, citing concerns that the Postal Service may not postmark mail-in ballots on the day they are received due to service reductions and distant processing centers.

Secretary of State Steve Hobbs noted that current turnout is slightly behind the 13.9% recorded at this stage four years ago. He expressed hope for higher participation but indicated that final turnout may not exceed the 64.6% recorded in 2022, noting the absence of a highly competitive statewide contest such as a U.S. Senate race.
