Washington state sports controversy sparks protests over transgender athlete participation
A protest involving female high school cross-country athletes at Camas High School in Washington has drawn significant public attention. The controversy began when a male athlete who identifies as a girl switched from the boys' team to the girls' team mid-season. In response, several female athletes walked off the course during a district-level competition to protest the decision, citing concerns regarding fairness and competition placement.
The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) maintains a policy stating that students may compete in sports consistent with their gender identity without providing medical or legal documentation. This policy has led to both protests and counter-protests, with some community members advocating for the inclusion of transgender students while others argue for the protection of biological female categories in sports.
The incident coincides with a state ballot measure, I-638, which asks voters whether males should be prohibited from competing against girls and women in school sports. A rally titled ‘Camas Courage’ was held in southwest Washington, where parents and supporters gathered to advocate for the initiative.
