Washington Superintendent requests $2 billion for public schools

Washington State Superintendent of Public Instruction Chris Reykdal has requested a nearly $2 billion increase for public schools in the upcoming 2027-2029 budget. The request aims to ensure the state meets its constitutional obligations to fund basic education for over 1 million students.

Of the total request, $1.2 billion is designated to fulfill the funding requirements established by the state’s highest court in the McCleary case. The remaining funds are intended to expand learning assistance for low-income families and restore funding to the Transition to Kindergarten program.

Reykdal noted that schools across the state are struggling with rising operational costs, citing that 11 schools are currently under state oversight due to financial conditions. He characterized the request as a necessary step for lawmakers to fulfill their constitutional duties despite potential budget shortfalls.
